Kathy Lee Gifford & "Bad Nasty Pagans"

topic posted Tue, July 1, 2008 - 5:26 PM by  Phoenix Faust
On Wednesday, June 25, 2008, during a live broadcast of a wedding
reception on the TODAY Show, Kathy Lee Gifford gratuitously referred to
Pagans as "nasty, bad Pagans." Ms. Gifford's hate speech has done harm
to American Pagans' ability to live in peace with our neighbors of
other faiths. By allowing her hate speech to be broadcast, her direct
employer the TODAY Show, and their network, NBC, participate in that
hate speech.

This is a petition calling for, at the very least, an on-air apology. A
TODAY Show program devoted to dispelling misconceptions about Pagans
and Paganism would go a long ways toward undoing the damage.

Thank you for calling attention to this. As a bad and nasty Pagan myself, I am appalled that Kathy Lee would dare to stereotype all Pagans as embodying the qualities that set some of us apart from Pagans who are "white light" and "fluffy bunny." It's not easy developing a reputation for being bad and nasty and here she is giving it away to Pagans who have done NOTHING to deserve it. Alas!!

    Here's my response to NBC;

Re: Not all Pagans are bad and nasty.

    To Whom It May Concern.

Pagans are diverse! Although some Pagans are in fact "nasty" (in a Janet Jackson kind of way) and "bad" (a la her brother Michael), there are also Pagans who are prefer love and light, vanilla sex, and dancing around maypoles wearing flowers in their hair. They are nice enough to include nasty Pagans in many of their rituals and drinking parties, but that doesn’t mean that Pagans are all the same. Just like, for example, some Christians follow Jesus’ teachings to turn the other cheek, renounce riches and help out poor and oppressed people while other Christians are ardent supporters of war, injustice and capitalism.

Please issue a public apology to those good and nice Pagans who are offended by being lumped together with Pagans of the bad and nasty variety. In the future, it would behoove you to consider issuing the following disclaimer on the bottom of the screen anytime Kathy Lee Gifford is on the air: “We at NBC recognize that although bad and nasty Pagans make up a segment of the Pagan community, they should not be mistaken as representative of Pagans as a whole….”

    Sincerely,

    thee origynal sinnerjee

Imagine if she had said "bad nasty" Jews?

I think this comment comes from an ignorance that Paganism and earth-based shamanic religions are still practiced by people. She didn't seem to realize that her comment would be offensive to anyone, as if she was only talking about something mythological.

    Let's educate Kathy!!

This makes the baby Jesus cry.
      And,
there ARE some bad, nasty pagans.
I've experienced a few who have tried to curse me.
      Silly things-
too high on Hogwarts, breakfast cereal, and medicine flowers.
      From my humble experience,
pagans can be as judgemental as Christians.

A little subject/SUBJECT Consciousness can go such a long way.
