The Pagan Man

When you see images of the green man, Hermes, and the horned gods of many pagan religious paths, it is easy to deduce that the male role is important within out pagan society. When I was younger, I went from elder to elder seeking to understand my role as a male in the ways of the various pagan paths. Although my findings were varied, a single idea prevailed. One of a strong man, full of wisdom. A protector of the innocent and a hunter and provider.

This was somewhat different from the images I was exposed to as a younger pagan male. The men that made up most of the pagan community seemed to be a little more and a little less, when measured to this general sense or idea of a pagan man.

On first impressions of the male pagan, I saw a man full of strong drink, drumming from dusk until dawn, a savage sexual appetite, and servant to the woman of their choosing. On the other hand I could also see a man that cared about his own and all children. I found a wealth of teachings about the land we call mother, and the ways and order of the circle of life we all share.

I must say that many ways and experiences from the pagan men who influenced me greatly, were in my mind conflicting. How could a strong man be a hunter, provider and protector of his clan or those who he was sided and also be sub servant, nurturing and bow to what seemed like a lesser position within our religion?

The men, who I learned from, were all of these things and more. Why then would they seem to take a lesser position within our pagan community?

In talking to a man who had the greatest impact on me as a pagan young man, I learned a lot from my mentor and elder Pond hopper I think he had the greatest impact on me, because he seemed to always have time to answer my often strange questions. He took the time to explain this to me and what I noticed was these were teachings he himself actually lived by.

I remember getting into the subject of pagan male role models and I asked him who his were. His answer surprised me. He said ' the Grey Squirrel'.

His words hit home for me. 'You see, the Grey Squirrel helps his mate to make a house in the trees for the family, he helps her in gathering nuts and food for the long winter'. ' When a wayward bird comes along to attack him and his young, he becomes a fierce fighter, yet to see the male Grey Squirrel with his young, he is tender and playful.'

I thought on this and quickly replied to Pond hopper asking him, ' well what about sharks or fish, who eat their young or leave their young to fend for themselves, never becoming a part of their life?'

I realize his reply to me now was to make me think for myself. He said to me, ' Have you ever heard on the television or read in a paper where a man hurt one of his kids or left his family alone?'

Then he asked me...' Why do you think that is?'

Of course I had no idea at that age as to why. Later on he explained by simply asking, it is funny how we mirror nature and nature seems to mirror us? The fact is we are not being mirrored at all, because we are apart of this circle of life.

We must play our role in this circle. The only difference between the animals and us is the fact that we can choose. We can choose to either be like the Grey Squirrel or like the shark. I pondered this for many years and found a lot of honor in his teachings.

I slowly began to understand that a good pagan man could be fierce and strong when need be. He can be a hunter and he can be a teacher as well.

A mature pagan man also understands that he is apart of a larger circle as well and must learn to adapt, live and work within both the clan family and the natural circles he finds himself in. I learned that there is a natural order and there is a wisdom needed to be able to navigate this order. This is something the pagan male will strive to become comfortable with by making mistakes and testing his bounds.

Falling down, becomes our teacher and the prize is wisdom. I have fallen down a lot in my life and on my pagan path. For that, I thank the gods and pond hopper for the effort and the gift of time they took to raise me to be a pagan man.

I still strive to understand the mother Earth and her circle that I must be a part of. I learned that I would fall down and in doing so I will learn. I know now that the role of the pagan male is something different to all of us depending on the teachers we have had. The way we have gained our wisdom to navigate the circles we are in are important. They are as important and those elders who take the time to teach us.

I am reminded that in my life as a pagan male, I am a role model for those younger men who watch me. They look to me for the knowledge needed to find their place within the circle as hunters, providers, protectors, servants, and men of real wisdom. I know that I owe a debt to the circle of life.

I know now that Pond Hopper was a man that understood the need to lead by example. I also know that while I may fall down, this is not the end of me. To be strong enough to do that means that I am not relegated to a lesser role within the pagan religion. My role is very well defined and the gods and my mentors are my guides.

getting to the crux of fae youth/elder visionary seeing, re: women on our lands

This is an excerpt of an exchange i'm having with a certain elder in our community. i thought i'd share it here with an invite to add to my (and your?) consciousness on this topic. Feel free to take this and post it on other faerie communal sites/boards!

i have to say that while i find myself on the fence on this topic, i am in agreement with you and the other elders whom have been taking the stand your are speaking of. Having said that, i see that the youth that you all have collectivley held on your shoulders (i.e. after, what, more than 20 years of fae community) are now only trying to take fae sensibility into places that their desires are going. New directions like becoming inclusive of women; and that those new directions make sense in today's realities as these youth feel them.

Even tho they are missing the polytricks of a lot of this, i think (i.e. where their approach has become "black and white" or "either/or").

Still, my own seeing is that the way in which this is happening sounds a lot like the political police (i.e. today's version of COINTELPRO) are influencing the nastier parts of how this vision wants to be implemented; i.e. as "each side" seemingly remains incapable of bridging between (and empathizing with) each others' positions. [Note: What the contexts of this seemingly impossible gap are, are perhaps many even tho i think they can all 'boil down to' one prevalent phenomenon, the one doing with "the generation gap"--which in itself is an artificially-promoted gap led by the political police both overtly and covertly]

Where our oft-spoken empathy *should* bring ecstatic room (much room) for dissent and grey area seeing, in actuality we are experiencing the superficiality of those claims and desires that have not been able to be practiced in such a way where they can be pivotal when *it truly counts*.

As far as faggot-centered decision-making on this? Well, a lot of the young generation are in on this; they are the leaders as far as i can tell; sooo, that means, FAGGOTS ARE making these decisions, divisive as they are, apparently.

i know my own experience in the context of faggots wanting women on the land; in the initial phases of women being invited, they become *more equal* than common faggot males like myself. So that's certainly an interesting phenomenon. Our need for sanctuary is being relegated to the sidelines as womenfolk are recruited (right word?) into the creation of something more dynamic (ultimately) than earlier renditions of faggotry and faggot community.

So it's the transition that i think we ought to cast our magick upon, my friend.

But of course, we are dealing with such in the context of more than 30 years of political police/Rollback efforts to divide our generations from each other (and not to mention the ramifications and reflections of oppressed faggot elder sensibilities now judged without empathy and in the most alienating ways; i.e. the prevalence of the phenomenon called "objectification" of each other amongst the elder portion of faggots, and today's safer approaches where "objectification" has to be evolved from in the younger generations' desires).

What do YOU think about all of THIS?

re: My friend said, in part:
but I truly feel they have no interest in understanding the roots of the fae movement and more pointedly the purchase of Wolf Creek. Because I know where those ideals came from and who made some of those decisions I am now the bad guy... Guess what.... I didn't really fit into any group when i was younger and now I find I do not fit in with another group.... another one that is finding no problem in opressing me.

A benefit concert will take place August 23rd from 7-11 p.m. on the porch at the Ancient way cafe( a few miles from ZMS).Singers are invited to perform with Janis finishing off the evening. I believe she will perform 8 songs( I never know when she will quit. A documentary film crew will arrive several days prior to interview anyone about Janis. We have set up an altar in the restaurant because she is so the subject of conversation and awe in relation to how she shaped so many people's lives.
She did have several requests. One is that she wants a National Holiday" Janis Day. on the third Saturday in August. A petition drive to aquire signatures is underway. I'll save the other request for that evening.
Tickets are $10.
Love to all,

In the Shadow of Community

Hi Faeries, I just have to get this off my chest. I've been around Faeries for over 10 years now, and have played my role - a not insignificant one, sometimes - in Faerie culture. I got the ball rolling with the Men Dancing Naked dances in Portland, which ran for about 5 years. I've hosted and/or facilitated many heart circles, and have tried to authentically let my truth spill forth in circle. I've DJ'd dances and created ritual and cooked meals and most of all, tried to listen and be a valuable member of community. I've lent my sweat and my heart to many projects, culminating in the Vancouver Green Body Gathering (VGBG). I did all this whilst the whole time trying to keep the focus off of any personal glory - this is true. I tried not to do things with ego, but simply because I could - my hands were capable, and there was work to be done - and because my spiritual path seemed to lead me into the role of organizer. That's it - just trying to use the gifts I was given.

VGBG was resoundingly, astoundingly successful. One of the difficulties for me, in fact, was that I felt like my role as "queen registrar" got overly polished, and I spent much of the Gathering wishing people would stop making such a big deal out of my contribution - though it would never have happened without same. I appreciated the ego-strokes but, really, I just wanted so much to go back to being danzante, everyfaerie, and not Danzante the Queen Registrar. It wasn't the accolades I sought but the rewards - like brotherhood, spirituality, family, love...

Then the issues began... It's too long ago and too far away for a blow-by-blow but events happened, personal misunderstandings - I tried, over and over to be a peacemaker, and over and over I got abused for my efforts. I kept these peace-making efforts to myself (and of course the other person involved) because I wanted so much NOT to play this drama out in community, lessening harm to any other. But these personal misunderstandings got magnified into a big community schism and this character was born, Evil Danzante, this cipher that continues to show up to this day, which I guess is why I'm writing this. I've been told to my face that I am a whole plethora of terrible, evil motivations, and each time I've had to work hard, with my emotional judo, to rise above the drama.

I'm not playing the victim - elder faeries who've sat in community for years, who I respect with all my heart, who've personally been there to witness this evolve over the years have spoken with me passionately to try and reassure me that all this drama was NOT ABOUT ME. I've been to 4 different Gatherings since the big schism, and each time, I've gone with open heart, and then WHAM within the first hour, usually, I've gotten hit in the face with this Evil Danzante character again. Like introducing myself to someone with smiles and a "Hi! I'm Danzante!" and getting "Oh, I know who you are" (half sneer, hooded eyes, not kind). Or, while running around like mad trying to finish a lovely opening dinner and getting "Well Dear, you do have a history..." (with the accusation that I was intentionally trying to cook food I knew someone couldn't eat - ewwwww, small, hateful...)

So here comes Breitenbush again, and I think of going and I think to myself, "OK but you better be prepared". Then I think what kind of community IS this? Where is my commitment? I live a life of depth and, to the best of my ability, honesty, and I wonder why I should sweat and invest in this community where I have to be so concerned with protecting myself from attack. At what point do these people invest in something deeper, in themselves, in all of us. Is it my role as elder to live in an unsafe environment, but to live in the light anyway? The hopeful side of me says yes, though another side of me says my dignity demands more.

Harry Hay talked about this Brotherhood, a historical tribe to which we all belonged. We have always been the healers and the shamans and the lovers. That depressed-minority-rip-each-other-to-shreds mentality that we found - created! - in the bars was hetero-imitative. We had been driven to it by secrecy, by shame, and we needed to shed the ugly green frog skin and become Faerie Princes all, to claim our birthright as a loving, spiritual people. We didn't have to invent this, we only had to remember it!

This rang so true for me, and I was so excited to share it when I found my true love, a good man who had spent his life in stewardship of others, like the kids in the high school where he worked - particularly the queer ones! - or as in the way he took care of his family, but a man nevertheless who was rejected by this hetero-imitative gay male "community". I was so excited to share with this man a world of gay men who had risen above all that stuff, and who had reclaimed their birthright, and who would honor him for the person he was, and for a while, and occasionally, when we visit our family in Portland, who still seems to be doing well (despite seperatism there, too).

Now where is my commitment? I am committed to my local faerie community, about ten of us who are a tight-knit family, though there's a whole other side to the Vancouver community who've chosen to seperate themselves - tearing us apart, again. (Question: Why has the BB Call, with a Vancouver QR, appeared in all the Northwest radical faerie e-mail lists, EXCEPT the Vancouver one?) It's happened in Portland, it's happened in Seattle, it happens and happens and it's all the same cloth. When shall we rise above?

A friend of mine says all social movements have to self-destruct before they are rebuilt in a lasting way. I hope this isn't true for us...

When shall we remember ourselves? Where do I place my heart?

Masked Faeries???

Why do you feel the need to wear a mask?
We are "Radical" Faeries! That means we are radical. We each have our own opinions. We each each live our lives our own way. I may not agree with some of the opinions of some of my peer Faeries that come on here but I respect them. At least they say their opinions and don't hide behind a mask.
I don't understand why you masked faeries ever state an opinion on anything. Since we don't know who you are then why should your opinion matter? Why do you have to hide? Some of you masked faeries are very obvious. We know who you are. Just by your very statements it is not hard to figure out .
There are many excuses I have heard on here about why you wear a mask. Some are because you don't want your BF to get crap for your opinions. If you have a stable relationship and he cares about you then he should respect your opinions just like you should respect his. Then there is the the one that feels he will get attacked for stating his opinions. That never stopped you in the past. You are very blatant about your opinions and have been very forward about them outside of these tribes so why hide online.
Come out of your masked closets and state your feelings. I personally will have more respect and will listen to what you have to say if there is an actual face or name to the statements made.
As long as you come in wearing your mask there is no reason to give any credence to any opinion you may have..
This is just my opinion and I'm not going to hide as I state it.

Unnecessary Faerie “War”. Perspective. truthS not TRUTH.

In this Fictional conversation, “Y” stands for a some one from the younger generation, “E” stands for some one from the elder generation. Please remember that fiction means the story is created from the mind, it does not mean the story is false. The meaning that I am using for “Faggot Community” in this little fictional conversation, is that of male faeries who love other male faeries. I am reclaiming the power of the word “faggot” and making it positive: I reject the negative power this word has; this is similar to how “fairy”--a very negative word angrily hurled at homosexual men for decades--was reclaimed and changed to a positive word. To symbolize it’s transformation, the organizers of the first Spiritual Gathering of Radical Faeries changed it’s spelling to “faerie”. Fairy (faerie)--once a powerful derogatory put down--is now embraced as a word full of love by men, women, queer, straight, trans, in-between, pangender and any other labels (including non-labels) of identification that I am not familiar with.

Y: Faggot Community does not need to be separate from the mixed community, we are all a part of the whole--united we stand, divided we fall.

E: If we look at it from that prospective then there is no such thing as Faggot Community, there is only Mixed Community. It would be like saying, there is no need for an Orchid Society, orchids are just flowers--they are a part of the Floral Society.

Y: Faggot Community is a thing of the past, it was “protective isolation” from the oppressive general society, but now that the general society is being more tolerant and accepting of queer people, protective isolation is no longer needed.

E: The first Radical Faerie gatherings were not about protective isolation; quite the contrary, these gathering were not about hiding, the were about coming forth--exploring who one is. Faggot Community first formed at a gathering, it was not Faggot Community escaping into the woods.

Y: I’ve never heard that before, could you elaborate?

E: In the 1930s to 1970s, homosexual males had to be very discreet in where they met; there was no community to speak of, it was just individual faggots getting together to have a drink and meet each other--often in fear of discovery and the brutal consequences if discovered; and I really do mean brutal, death being a very real possibility.

Y: I very much understand and empathize with that. So the gatherings really were an escape from that oppression.

E: No, I was just setting up the background. In the 70s, there was a sort of faggot community, but it was still mostly individual faggots who came together from time to time to socialize and discuss their social/political status. This community tried to reach out to the general society, specifically to straight males, who were doing all the “gay bashing”. This faggot community--also called the Gay Community--wanted to have the gay bashing stop, they were tired of seeing their friends hospitalized or in the morgue.

Y: I would be tired too; I would be angry!

E: The faggot community was angry, but their sorrow was much greater. This community spoke to the oppressing straight males: “Please stop brutalizing us, we are just like you are--except for what we do in bed”. Emphasis was very much on the “we are JUST like you are”.

Y: So, I have not yet seen anything that indicates that the early gatherings were not protective isolation.

E: I’m getting there. In the mid 70s a group of faggots met and said to each other: “but we are NOT just like straight men, we are very different--it’s what we do in bed that is the same, the only variation is that it’s two males, rather than a male and a female”. “Outside of sex, we are very different; how different, we don’t really know for there is no real information about us any where”. “Why don’t we send out a call for others who feel they are different from straight men, and lets us discover for ourselves who we are: let us explore what is and what can be”.

Y: So why isn’t this common knowledge amongst the larger mixed gender faeries?

E: It is common knowledge, it just doesn’t seem to mean anything. Perhaps this is because what is not common knowledge, is what really happened at these early gatherings. People tend to think that what is called a gathering today is what a gathering has always been.

Y: You mean early gatherings were not like the fabulous gatherings of today?

E: They were fabulous and they were more more human growth oriented “work” than today’s gatherings. The early gatherings had 10 to 15 different circles a day; and I do me a day--these circles were attended through out the entire day; a gathering was not a festival or “hang out with friends ‘get together’”.

Y: That sounds rather boring and tedious; it sounds too much like a conference. It certainly doesn’t sound like anything I would be interested in. Where’s the fun? Where’s the joy? Where’s the spontaneity? Where’s the connecting? Doesn’t really sound very “faerie” to me. Heart circle is enough circle for me.

E: Yes, there were 13 circles offered, but no one attended all 13; you couldn’t because many of the circles went on at the same time; you chose one to three you were interested in. In between circles there was plenty of time to do other things. Unlike today’s gatherings, most people who attended a gathering hung out in common space all day long, rather than wandering off from common space in small groups. We had heart circle too; heart circle was created during the first gatherings.

Y: How could you possibly have heart circle as well as all those other circles? Didn’t you feel talked out?

E: Not all the circles were verbal. Many involved touch: massage, communicating needs & wants without words, looking into each others eyes, nurturing through holding, group mud bath (that was both fun and very nurturing), trust walks, blindfolded group explorations. All of these circles--verbal and non-verbal--helped bring resonance magick forth.

Y: What do you mean by Resonance?

E: Suppose you have 20 Tibetan Bowls: two identical sets of 10 bowls of various sizes. Now suppose you place a set of 10 bowls on one side of a room, and place the other set on another side. You choose one bowl and make it “sing” by rotating a think piece of wood shaped like a wand around its rim. On the other side of the room, one of those bowls also sings. The bowl that sings without being It “made to”, will be the same size as the first bowl. Make 2 or more different bowls sing on one side and you will have harmony. On the other side of the room, you will also have harmony: a harmony created from 2 or more resonating bowls.

Y: How does Resonance apply to male faeries who love other male faeries?

E: Male faeries who love other male faeries are like a Tibetan Bowl of the same size; they are almost the same person--only a slight variation separates one from the other.

Y: So, what did this Resonating do for you?

E: It helped us learn to know, trust and love every one else at the gathering. It helped create “Tightly-Bonded Community”: community where each person felt they belonged to something greater than themselves; community where no one would think twice about helping their brother learn to love themselves; community where we were mirrors for each other; community where helping one person’s growth helped the entire community grow: a community of Lovers!

Y: What do you mean by a community of lovers?

E: You know about being “single”. You know about couple relationships. You may have even heard about triads and quads. Now imagine a group of males being so knowledgeable, so loving and so intimate with each other that they always want to live with everyone else--as a whole group!. Intimacy that involved body, mind, heart and soul. This was a newly discovered type of love. A loved we believed had existed before, but due to various circumstances was lost, so in reality, this love was rediscovered. This group love was possible because we resonated with each other, we were in sync: body, heart, mind and spirit.

Y: You still sound quite elitist with faggot males being the only group of people who can have Tightly-Bonded Resonance Community.

E: I never said males who love males were the ONLY group who could resonate; we--as far as I know--were just the first group who rediscovered this way of relating. If you remember my illustration of the 20 Tibetan bowls of various sizes, each bowl of the same size can resonate with any and all bowls of the same size--in this particular illustration, the would be 10 different resonations. I think that’s beautiful, incredibly beautiful. And then remember, these various sizes of resonating bowls can be sounded together to make other types of music. More beauty, more delight!

Y: I still have one more question. Why would you want to exclude women from this fabulous Tightly-Bonded Resonance Community?

E: Would it be exclusion if you had a 100 Tibetan Bowls all of the same size resonating like crazy and then put 10 bowls of a different size in their midst? Introduce a 101 bowl of the same size into the group of bowls and immediately it would begin to resonate--to sing; the 10 bowls of a different size would not. However, put those 10 bowls in a group of bowls their size, and behold the same type of magick as the first set. Oh, and please remember: Resonance Community is only ONE form of community; there are MANY others. We can celebrate each others different communities. We can celebrate each others truthS. I hope faeries never adopt the idea of a single TRUTH, it would destroy all of the love and beauty.

Y: Let us walk down the road of life hand in hand celebrating who we are as individuals and who we are as groups. As you say, we can celebrate each others truthS; we have no need to fight or put each other down. Long live faeries of all kinds!

There are several projects that I would like to see completed in the next year or so. And, there are many ways that you can lend me and/or this land a hand.

Are you: Interested in living for a period of time around Short Mountain/IDA area? Looking to invest in property in the area? Have carpentry skills? Enjoy taking apart and rebuilding and old country cabin? Have land maintenance/management skills? Like a cool creek to jump in and float on those hot summer days of play/work? Have design skills? Others that are not mentioned that you might think are helpful?

If any of this sounds appealing to you, contact me soon & let’s talk.

I will be posting some pictures of the land/creek in the next few days.

Kathy Lee Gifford & "Bad Nasty Pagans"

On Wednesday, June 25, 2008, during a live broadcast of a wedding
reception on the TODAY Show, Kathy Lee Gifford gratuitously referred to
Pagans as "nasty, bad Pagans." Ms. Gifford's hate speech has done harm
to American Pagans' ability to live in peace with our neighbors of
other faiths. By allowing her hate speech to be broadcast, her direct
employer the TODAY Show, and their network, NBC, participate in that
hate speech.

This is a petition calling for, at the very least, an on-air apology. A
TODAY Show program devoted to dispelling misconceptions about Pagans
and Paganism would go a long ways toward undoing the damage.

mental health and faerie dynamix

well i have been pondering about the fates and how they have us and i have been brought to the screen to speak of mental health and how we can propose to be better to each other and how we may fill the circle with more healthy models for being with each other. Another brother has killed himself in our tribe. Not being able to take it. In my times with this brother i wanted to hold and help him and yet it wasnt within our relationship for us to be able to. As a steward of a sanctuary sometime you have to take hard lines with people, being stewards of spirit you cant let your spirit be sucked down by anothers....and yet it is hard to really know the good or bad you are doing when in the stage of sanctuary. At times this brother became very abusive and at other times he was a golden child. It was very hard to be hard with him when i wanted to see him in his glory and help him to find his gifts.

It is not easy to take aways the scripts of our dramas. I say that for myself and not to project onto anyone else, nor to inflame a thread of hate onto me, but instead to begin to forge a new way for al of us to interact and to be. A path where we support the mental health of each other and the tribes health which is paramount.

Thank you for hearing me while i release this to great mystery and my brothers and sistas......

I havent decided yet as to wich gathering I will go to. I suppose whatever gathering I am supposed to go to will present itself to me in a form of a ride there and posiibly a ride back, or vise versa.
I am loooking for a people to ride with. If I can't find anyone to ride to ride with then I will possibly drive my car and if anyone wants to jump on my faerie clown car then all I expect is help with gas.

We are a family

I wrote this in my blog too. However decided that i needs to be posted a bit as it seems their is so much anger, hate and other things going around. WE need to heal from these things before they consume us and we become so bitter that we can't even live, love our own life.

see out in the world that so many are yelling, fighting, struggling to be heard for what they say and yet I wonder do they even listen to what they are saying. Most of us want to be heard, to be notice to make a statement and others hear it or read it, even to comment on it. Some of us say things just to scream, yell, shout, or even to stir up and create conflict just to be heard. We the radical faeries, light workers, pagans, and sorts who comes together during gathering time we can change from what the world is offering us, to offering the world something so much better, something new and exciting.
Yet at the same time there are those who just don’t care, it’s all about me, me, me, me, and me. We each have our own right to our own opinion what one may see as truth another may see only as half truth. You know that half cup of water deal – what do you see- a half cup of water full, or half empty. I think we all want to be noticed, wanting support in one way or another. I feel however we revert back to what the world has taught us which is seeing the half empty cup of water. We tend to see the negative, what’s bad or what wrong. We over look the positive, the lessons that we or others have learned and don’t acknowledge that we learned something so it actually was positive not negative.
Sure we go to different places, groups, sanctuaries and we bring our expectation of what it should be, what it should do, what it should offer and most times we are let down. We set our expectations so high that nothing in this world could meet them not even ourselves. It’s time we let those expectations down, let them go, give them to spirit. Instead of hating each other, putting each other down for what we wanted we didn’t get, or what we thought or should or expected from another we didn’t get. Turn and look in the mirror did you give that to others while you were there did you give what they expected, what they wanted, what they thought, what they shoulded on you?
WE ARE A FAMILY – Together all of us, each and every one of us. Instead of beating each other down, it’s time to change by helping each other stand, supporting one another when they fall, helping them when they think they might not need it or when they do need it. There are caretakers of the land and other faeries who have gatherings of support at their homes, who do their best to keep these places running and all we see is what they don’t have, what they should have, what they should be, etc. etc. Instead of complaining about all of this what about waking up and giving them a hand, helping where help is needed and not complain about something they don’t have or didn’t go your way. It’s time to start saying enough, learn, listen, hear what you are saying, hear what others are saying, respect goes both ways. If all your willing to do is take what does that say about you?
I see these places all having gatherings and yet at no gathering do I see us all coming together as a family which is what we are and going around cleaning up, or taking care of the property, or helping those that are on the land fix a building or even dig a new out house. Instead we just go to these places expecting them to do all the work and for us to all come and relax doing nothing at all, just having fun. It would be nice to see us all get up off our duffs just for one day or even a half a day during a gathering, for us all to come together and help out those who are on the land who are in need. To take the initiative to finish a building, or help repair a roof, or whatever is needed. If we all came together to do this we would all have including the care takers a great place, comfortable place, joyful place, loving place to share with one another, after all isn’t this what families do? In times of need we are always welcome, we are always able to come and say help, or able to just run or leave and get away from the mundane world.
Instead of going to gatherings and take, take, take and leave nothing behind. It’s time we leave something behind, our love, our spirit, our energy, and our help.
A family does more then take, they take care of each other, take care of the property, take care of whatever comes their way. Standing together, standing strong there are all kinds of ways to give back. Some of us are capable of doing physical work, some of us are capable of healings of all sorts, some of us are great cooks, and some of us are able to help others relax through meditation, yoga and sorts. Together there are so many things we are capable of doing when we come together and we could create what others might call miracles if we all could come together instead of just taking. If not at gatherings then lets create a time to come together and help each other out.
We live in the outside world, we perform in the outside world yet we do not feel we belong to the outside world completely; we are faeries of all sorts. We live in the world between here and there and realms of all kinds as we travel about. Casting our magic, doing our dance, and living our lives where ever we go living, loving, being.

WE ARE A FAMILY ARE WE NOT!

8th Annual Shaman's Gathering..... THE CALL

The 8th annual Queer Shamanism Gathering will be held between August 15th-24th, 2008 @ Zuni Mountain Sanctuary in northwestern New Mexico.

The Stewards of the sanctuary are putting out a call for energy assistance in this endeavor.

This years proposed and requested possibilities include -- Storytelling, Heart Sharing; Sweat Lodge; Positive Tea; Playback Theater; Acoustical Music Circle, Divination Studies, Desert Walkabouts / Visionquesting ; Massage, Energy Balancing, Claycrafting; Desert astronomy; entheogen discussion; body/energy playgroup; BDSM workshop, desert spirit rain dance; Morning/Evening Yoga; Incense Making; Herb Wildcrafting; Poetry ReadingRants, permaculture and various happening and on-going infrastructure projects.

A Know-Your-Talent Show Multi-Media Arts Exhibit is planned for the Wednesdays (in the middle of the happening) as a benefit for the sanctuary and the neighboring community. Help make this your gathering by letting us know where your interests are and how you would like to plug your energy into the mix.

Plenty of tenting areas are being prepared by faeries for camping on Camp Hill as well as more secluded permaculturely friendly areas on the land. The RV parking is also available for persuns wishing to camp nearer the road. Food and water will be provided by the sanctuary with vegetarian meals prepared and served by volunteer attendees. Please notify us of any dietary restrictions, allergies or other health concerns or with special needs we should know about.

*** To help cover the costs for this years event a suggested donation of 35/day per persun per day is requested - more if you can less if you cant; no one turned away for lack of funds. This year as in the past there will be also be study/actualization spaces for those seeking independent explorations.

Full or partial pre-registration funds would be most helpful. Checks can be paid to the order of Zuni Mountain Sanctuary and sent to us by snail mail care of ZMS attn: ShamGath 2008 PO Box 636 Ramah, NM 87321 Even if you are unable to prepay please notify the sanctuary to let us know if you are planning to attend.

--- IN YOUR REGISTRATION REPLY PLEASE INCLUDE --- How you want to be referenced - name and the best way to contact you; your estimated time of arrival in New Mexico -- also if you are driving to the sanctuary and need driving instructions or a map. Pick-ups from the bus/train/airport in Gallup or Albuquerque can be arranged, compensation for gas requested. Carpooling is also helpful so let someone know if you have extra room for sharing space with other travelers.

It is also proven helpful for visitors to have a persunal intention declared for themselves lending definition and structure to their time in space in the sanctuary during the gathering. Intentions can be general or specific but should allow for open-ended possibilities. Past experiences on the land indicate that in offering such a devotional pledge - such an act lends definition and measure to your experience and the ways in which we may better serve one another.

If hospitality is your scene you can contact the sanctuary to let us know your specialties. We always need crews for Cafeteria Committee, Kitchen Queens, HydroGrrls , Dish Dudes and Wood Tenderers. If you have any other skills or talents you would like to share let us know in advance so as to better accommodate your context for space and/or materials in which to honor your gifts.

*** Please notify ZMS either by email zunimtn@wildblue.net or by phone 505.783.4002 to let us know you if intend to attend - to arrange transportation or with any questions.

Quentin Crisp

It is explained that all relationships require a little give and take. This is untrue. Any partnership demands that we give and give and give and at the last, as we flop into our graves exhausted, we are told that we didn't give enough.
Quentin Crisp

It is not the simple statement of facts that ushers in freedom; it is the constant repetition of them that has this liberating effect. Tolerance is the result not of enlightenment, but of boredom.
Quentin Crisp

It's no good running a pig farm badly for 30 years while saying, 'Really, I was meant to be a ballet dancer.' By then, pigs will be your style.
Quentin Crisp

Life was a funny thing that happened to me on the way to the grave.
Quentin Crisp

Living en famille provides the strongest motives for rudeness combined with the maximum opportunity for displaying it.
Quentin Crisp

Love is not enough. It must be the foundation, the cornerstone- but not the complete structure. It is much too pliable, too yielding.
Quentin Crisp

Manners are love in a cool climate.
Quentin Crisp

Men get laid, but women get screwed.
Quentin Crisp

My mother protected me from the world and my father threatened me with it.
Quentin Crisp
Never keep up with the Joneses. Drag them down to your level.
Never keep up with the Joneses. Drag them down to your level. It's cheaper.
Quentin Crisp

Nothing more rapidly inclines a person to go into a monastery than reading a book on etiquette. There are so many trivial ways in which it is possible to commit some social sin.
Quentin Crisp

Nothing shortens a journey so pleasantly as an account of misfortunes at which the hearer is permitted to laugh.
Quentin Crisp

Sex is the last refuge of the miserable.
Quentin Crisp

The British do not expect happiness. I had the impression, all the time that I lived there, that they do not want to be happy; they want to be right.
Quentin Crisp

The consuming desire of most human beings is deliberately to plant their whole life in the hands of some other person. I would describe this method of searching for happiness as immature. Development of character consists solely in moving toward self-sufficiency.
Quentin Crisp

The formula for achieving a successful relationship is simple: you should treat all disasters as if they were trivialities but never treat a triviality as if it were a disaster.
Quentin Crisp

The law is simply expediency wearing a long white dress.
Quentin Crisp

The poverty from which I have suffered could be diagnosed as "Soho" poverty. It comes from having the airs and graces of a genius and no talent.
Quentin Crisp

The trouble with children is that they're not returnable.
Quentin Crisp
The very purpose of existence is to reconcile the glowing opinion we have of ourselves with the appalling things that other people think about us.
The young always have the same problem - how to rebel and conform at the same time. They have now solved this by defying their parents and copying one another.
Quentin Crisp

There are three reasons for becoming a writer: the first is that you need the money; the second that you have something to say that you think the world should know; the third is that you can't think what to do with the long winter evenings.
Quentin Crisp

There is no need to do any housework at all. After the first four years the dirt doesn't get any worse.
Quentin Crisp

Though intelligence is powerless to modify character, it is a dab hand at finding euphemisms for its weaknesses.
Quentin Crisp

To know all is not to forgive all. It is to despise everybody.
Quentin Crisp

Vice is its own reward. It is virtue which, if it is to be marketed with consumer appeal, must carry Green Shield stamps.
When I told the people of Northern Ireland that I was an atheist, a woman in the audience stood up and said, 'Yes, but is it the God of the Catholics or the God of the Protestants in whom you don't believe?

Healing the Ancestors (repost from Wolf Creek Faeries)

We seem to be in the midst of a recurrence of the Great Faerie Gender Debate.

I think that one reason this "argument" comes up over and over is because it has as much to do with relationships between younger and older gay men -- and between gay men and gay ancestors -- as it does with men and women.

I feel moved to repost something I wrote on this topic last year.

love Stella

Healing the Ancestors
http://wolfcreekfaeries.tribe.net/thread/8cb9c5c5-ac06-47a6-9eb9-e92dee7a64a6
July 11, 2007

I feel them so strongly on the Land. The ancestors. Our Faerie forefaggots. The revolutionary shaman queens who searched and strove to buy this land, and their brothers and lovers and friends.

And especially that generation of men that was cut down by AIDS like grain under the scythe.

Their ashes cover the land in a thin grey layer, mixed with tears and glitter.

They should have been 45 now (my age). Or 55. Or 75. They should have been our partners, mentors, leaders, priests. Our queer aunties and grandfathers.

So many of them were so young. Now a lost generation of men is turning into a lost generation of elders.

I feel them watching us, whispering to us. Some of them have gone on, graduated. They're loving us from wherever is next, but with detachment. They want us to be happy, but they're not stuck in human limitations anymore.

Others never got to finish their work, so they're nagging at us, wanting us to do it for them. Joggling our elbows. Making cold spots on the road between Garden House and the parking lot.

* * *

They're here in this conflict, although we don't name them very often.

They're here in how we try to fulfill -- or rebel against -- the intentions of our Faerie founders. We hear their voices in our heads and try to imagine what they would have wanted. It's easy to make dead people into symbols, and forget that they were just as complex and conflictual as we are.

They're also in the deep scars of grief some of us carry. I didn't live those seasons of loss, but I love people who did. And they tell me about years of going from funeral to funeral to funeral, when entire friendship circles were decimated.

You don't ever get over something like that.

But thanks to the miracle of modern medicine, we get to pretend like you can. And an entire generation of younger Fae has been spared from knowing what that terrible time was like.

Sometimes I want to say to the younger Fae: "You don't know what these men have lived through, so sit the fuck down and show some respect."

Underneath the "gender wars" there is a deep well of grief. One way people grieve the beloved dead is by resisting the changes that have happened since they died.

Sometimes I want to say to the older Fae: "I know you miss them, but my going away won't bring them back."

* * *

In his article "Gay Adults! Gay Adults! Where Are You?" (whitecrane.typepad.com/journa...g.html)
Don Kilhefner says:

"...whenever and wherever humans are found there seems to be a patterning of life into four stages called youth, adult, elder, and ancestor. Moreover, each of these stages have significant social roles to play in the village. There is a profound and fundamental interdependence between these stages and societal roles upon which the health and vitality of the village or tribe are largely based."

Our ancestors didn't get to stay around and give us their blessing as elders. And I think this loss can be seen in how we have been hurting each other.

I think that mourning them together, and asking them for their blessing, might help us finally lay this conflict to rest.

in anothet thread, artwit objected to women in the radfae movement. does he speak for the majority? is wolf creek, as artwit says, merely sexual space? if that is the case, if the rf movement is a mysogynist organization, then i want none of it.
i did try three times to postt this in the appropriate thread, but for some reason, couldn't.

SLC Fae?

I am going to be in Salt Lake City June 18-21 on business, so I am wondering whether there might be any sort of rad fae presence in the SLC area. Friday night the 20th and all day and night Saturday the 21st are going to be free days for me for hiking, sightseeing, or whatever. So I guess this is just a general post to see if there might be anything interesting in Salt Lake City.

BTW Early Registration Ends June 30

Forwarding this announcement.
Between The Worlds is a gay/bi men's pagan festival
http://www.betweentheworlds.org/
__________________________

Gentlemen,

This is just a friendly reminder that early registration for BTW 2008
ends on June 30th. Registrations postmarked after that date will cost
$100 until registration ends on August 17.

There are some fairly big changes taking place at Wisteria this year.
Because they have decided to host the Cornstalk Festival
(www.wisteria.org/cornstalk.htm), Wisteria has been improving
infrastructure in the campground. The Green Faerie Grove and friends
went down there over Memorial Day weekend and helped with some of the
improvements, including framing the new stage and turning the dance
area at Town Green into a sandy space that will be most loverly on the
feet. New wooded camping areas have also been cleared, roads have been
added and improved, and marked camping zones have been established to
make it easier for people to find one another (including in
emergencies). The Faerie Shrine has been dramatically expanded since
last year, and solar-powered lighting has been added to provide a
magickal experience in the middle of the woods. In another exciting
development, Wisteria has also granted us the right to establish our
own queer spirit shrine on the property. This is a topic that was
first broached with them in 2000, and is an exciting development for us.

Wisteria's new stage, which is now 42 feet wide by 20 feet deep, will
have state of the art sound and lighting systems. In honor of the
spirit of friendship and partnership that we have developed over the
last 10 years with Wisteria, the Green Faerie Grove has loaned
Wisteria the money to help them finish their dream stage. In return,
Wisterian Todd Alan has volunteered his services to run the sound and
lighting for BTW.

Sunshine has worked with us to keep the Meal Plan at the same price as
last year despite the dramatic increase in food prices. Unfortunately,
for those who have gotten accustomed to unlimited return visits for
food, those days are officially over. Furthermore, there will be a
regular ticketed meal at the end of BTW (i.e., no more all-you-can-eat
buffet). These changes will ensure that everyone who has purchased a
Meal Plan will be fed, and will allow Rowan to continue to serve us
without raising prices this year. Our Coffee Diva, Holly, will once
again be with us with her wonderful tie dyed clothing line. She tells
us that she is finally tired of Vietnam, and wouldn't miss her boys
for anything.

We hope that everyone is surviving the weather, economy, gas prices,
politicking and other annoying things that are shaping 2008.

Love and Blessings,

I moved back to Texas last week, in hopes of reconnecting to more like-minded people. Unfortunately Faery involvement is not very high in Texas. I spoke to a few faeries who said that local faery involvement just dried up about two years ago. I was hoping there were faery or similar groups near Houston that I could get involved with. Ive anyone has any suggestions I am willing to try anything. Im not above doing a strip tease if it will get people to be active, I fear the only action Id see would be the people leaving as soon as I go for my belt buckle though :-P

Any suggestions, comments or poetry on the subject would be helpful :-P

Sad, Sad news from Chael

This was posted on the National Faerie Yahoo Group List this morning....
===========================================================================================================

Hello dear faes;

I am sad to share this missive with the list but there are many on this list that knew Louise from gatherings at Short Mountain Sanctuary. Louise passed from this life yesterday morning from a heart attack. For those of you that knew of her beloved Maine coons Max and Rosie, they are being well cared for. Should I hear further information regarding Louise's passing I will post that information here.

The tears are running hot on my cheeks any my heart is heavy with her loss!

chael aka hunny chael and the barkless ones

=========================================================================================================

Truly, truly sad news indeed. Cooking muffins with Louise in the early morning hours, in the kitchen, at Short Mountain sharing bagels and dishing up tea was truly is one of my fondest memories of Tennessee gatherings. Sitting with her on the knoll while she knitted as I would rest on the stone table by the goat barn in the afternoon’s comes in a very close second! She truly was a wonderful, kind, spirit who will be irreplaceable within the confines of this existence.

The Final Edition of the ICP

Dear Friends of the International Carnival of Pozitivities:

It is with both joy and sadness that I am writing to announce the final edition of the ICP. After you receive this notice, I will delete the mailing list for the ICP from my files and you will no longer receive announcements about the project. I was placed on a new drug regimen about 2 months ago and have experienced a serious side effect to the new meds. I am no longer able to continue to maintain the project as a result.

Please know that it has been a joy to bring you the ICP for the past 2 years and that I wish I could continue the project into the future. However, my focus has to be on my own healing now. For those of you who have contributed or hosted the ICP, my heartfelt gratitude can hardly be expressed. For those who blog about HIV/AIDS and who fight to end the stigma of this disease, I urge you to continue your work. We are all in the fight of our lives.

Many, many thanks to Sokari at Blacklooks for hosting the final edition of the ICP at the following link:

http://www.blacklooks.org/2008/06/international_carnival_of_positives_-_final_edition.html

Please visit, read and leave your feedback for the host and the contributors in this, the last edition of the ICP.

I wish you all peace and health.

Much love.

open message to those who tell me

To those who tell me, in systematically overly vague ways
that I "talk too much" I have just this to say to you:

silence=death
and
nonsilence=possibility

We all do our best with what we have and what consciousness we can attain; well, at least I do.

For you and others to remain being so vague about this

only tells me that your interest is to threaten and hold threats over others
more than to reach out to a fellow human being in times of mutual (?) duress.

May those who have gotten on my case over the years about this
And those whom i've given away portions of my power to about this
May they be less vague when speaking to me about these things in the future!

And if they aren't, May I learn to ignore them in the same intensity they fire at me.

I am putting my life on the line for being who i am everyday, while not breaking hysteria laws.
i feel quite alone in the world of hype and hysteria, but it has become a spiritual path.

i look forward to new levels of consciousness about all of this and much more
in the coming years, if such can articulate itself better!

Oregon Country fair pass sought; faerie camp out nearby?

Hi All, a longtime dream of mine is to get a 'pass' for the Oregon Country Fair and stay in at night for the festivities...any leads would be appreciated... I can offer a variety of skills: from running group kitchens to healing energy work, reiki and massage to photography, video and web & marketing design...

This will be a special year for me: my 50th!

Hugz around
Kwai from Santa Cruz

PS. another idea: how about a faery camp at one of the nearby campgrounds? Thanks to Leo StarFucker Sunshine for the idea;;)

Beading Party was Buzzing!!

Howdy y'all,

What a great time yesterday. Several of the local faeries showed up to Casa de los Mariposas, here in loverly (Judy)Garland, TX, for the bead stringing benefit. We put together nearly thirty strands of 'like-minded" beads to sell towards alleviating the travelling expenses for those lucky NOTX faeries that are able to make the trip to Short Mountain's Beltane celebration.

The beads, along with some covered tins and pens, will be for sale during the gathering either on the porch or in the breezeway of the goat barn. Wherever there is space. Thanks to everyone who participated. It is a sure sign of faerie artistic talent that my little orphan polymer clay beads now look as if they were meant to be together all along.

hugz all 'round,

Esteban

In (Judy)Garland, TX where last night the Goddess blessed my Spring garden with nearly two inches of rain. Everything is gushing with green this morning already. Yahoooooooooooo...........

..everyone safe travels to your Beltaine celebrations wherever you may be traveling to (or even if you are staying home)

It is an amazing and beautiful thing to realize that we will be celebrating the day together even though we may be scattered across the US, Europe, Asia and Australia and all the other places, realms and planets we live on ;) I'll be thinking of you all as I help to weave the ribbons together. This year will be as spectacular as always. I get the sense that many people are feeling the call to come home and dance around the maypole(s)...

These are difficult times we live in, but the energy we bring to these gatherings/celebrations will help us return to the "real" world with more strength and courage to do what must be done to birth change into the world. It's not just a celebration of re-birth, it's a chance for us to re-connect with each other and to share our loves with one another. If you do only one thing this Beltaine, tell your friends how much you love and appreciate them..

Blessed beees!!

Hi loves,

My name is Bradley, I am new to this tribe, and I wanted to introduce myself.

I am so incredibly stoaked to have found that this tribe exists. I mean in real life. I can't wait to meet you in person.

I spent a lot of time by myself recently while abroad. In that time, I read Hay's "Radically Queer" and had no idea there were communities like this in the world, loosely based on the radical ideas I read in his book. I want to garden with you forever!

I spent two years in a co-op at my university, but it's nowhere near as focused as the RadFae community and the sanctuaries ran in their name.

Anywho, enough gushing. In short: hi, here I am; I am very excited the rest of you exist.

Love,
Bradley

What to bring to a gathering/

Yay! Well I am happy to be headed to greener pastures (moo) for Spring Gathering in TN and it got me thinking about what people bring to gatherings.. Both in a physical sense and a spiritual sense. While a tent, flashlight, water bottle, towels and a comfy sleeping bag is handy for any SMS gathering; there are also other things to think about adding to a pre-gathering checklist. I always seem to post something here about "intention" and things like that, but this time I wanted to post about something that is just as important for having a healthy, safe and fabulous gathering.

When 400 people from all over the world gather together in the woods and spend a week or so cooking, cleaning, shitting , making ritual, dancing, drugging, not drugging, drinking tea, teabagging, having sex and all that other stuff we do..(shhh gotta keep some of it secret!!!) there is always the reality that people will come in contact with bugs, viruses, sexually transmitted illnesses (STI's) which have an effect on the well being of each of us individually and collectively.

So I'm want to ask people a simple question to consider, whether you are headed to SMS or Wolf Creek or Wherever the winds may take you..

When was the last time you were tested for HIV or STI's?

Every six months is a recommended period of time for those who are sexually active, and it's good to at least know one's status once a year. I know that talking about this stuff is sorta like herding cats with faeries at times, everyone has their own views on HIV, transmission and personal risk and safety, but I wanted to put the thought bubble out there to the universe that we are not only responsible for our own health and well being, but that our community survival is also at stake. I'd like to go to a gathering where I don't find out that five more of my friends sero-converted due to either not knowing other peoples status or simply not wanting to know..

I'll love you either way poz, negative or not sure, I guess I thought that suggesting that peeps getting tested before gathering time might bring a little more awareness and care to our lovely reality we create in the woods. The reality is that yes, while some people with HIV are living longer and "surviving" with wonderful side effects, it ain't no picnic I assure you. I'm a short term survivor of 12 years with HIV. Got gas? Yes, hon, I do!

I have seen the statistic that up to 1/4th of all people that are HIV positive may not know they are carrying the virus. As I type this out, I feel like it's 1992 and I'll be branded a heretic of sorts for asking people to get tested, it's not very "faerie", but anyways I just want people to be informed and empowered in the choices they make..

In life and at gatherings there are many people who continue to insist on remaining blissfully unaware of their status. I always find the best policy is DO ask, DO tell, not be ashamed either way and encourage others to do the same. There was a time when I let fear get in the way of disclosure and was blissfully unaware... It took me being placed in a situation where I potentially infected someone and dealing with the guilt and shame of that experience to become more aware of things and more self loving...

So maybe a combination of testing before and talking with your faerie dance partner for the evening, week or life during your time in the woods is something to add to your gathering list...

I'm just sayin'.....

In love and light.. See you in the woods and around the Maypole....
Re: Bennett remembered for puppets and humor

I was very sad to hear about Bennett leaving this wold. I have many fond memories of him. Here is one from 1986.
There was a big faerie party at Golden Gate House, a huge flat in San Francisco where David Kerlick, Jim, the late Leo Ayers (sp?) and the late Gary Compton and at various times other faeries, lived. Harry & John were there, visiting from LA.
About 10 PM, and it's a cold foggy night, Bennett, naked at the party, walked out the door in the buff. It was an African-American neighborhood at the time, and myself and others were worried what might happen to Bennett wandering the streets buck naked!
About 1 AM Bennett returns with a big smile on his face, naturally prompting several of us to inquire about his adventures.
Bennett, said," I walked to the park (Alamo Square) a few blocks away and laid down face down on a bench. Then I waited a long, long time.
It was cold, but the colder it got , the hotter I got! Then I saw there was something there. It was a man! "
Bennett did not have to tell the rest of the story. We, like Bennett, now all had smiles on our faces.
xxoo,

I just found this, having read through comments about the article on Bennett...

Its a video of him talking about being harrased shortly before his death....

There's a video on Youtube, "Bennett Speaks": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G0egAfxY3a0 and continues: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UQVisgCHNlY
Bennett talks about being harrassed, but being unable to get help from the police, instead him being told to not call 911, though Bennett says he felt like he was in danger. A few months later, Bennett is burned in his camp...

Only in our greatest most rigid disconnect(s) from each other can we begin to see how connected we really are how connected we have been how connected we will continue being [Punctuate as you wish]

The closer we are together the easier it is for “a slight variation” to disconnect us from each other [Again several punctuation possibilities]

The magick people who have only “a slight variation” with each other have is and will continue to be absolutely amazing loving and truly joyful [Ditto]

Cosmic Note: “a slight variation” is a complex--and sometimes simple--matrix of n-dimensional probabilities. [n can be positive, negative, zero, null, rational, irrational, imaginary, magickal, illusional, real, sacred, non-linear, dependent, independent, interdependent, false, true, maybe, fuzzy, rabbit hole, beautiful, illogical, logical, fluid, fixed, variable, soft, hard, quiet, loud, either or, both and, etc.]
